Plot Summary
Ashley, an archaeologist, sits in a cave and records the drawings that she sees on the walls. There are large figures all marching towards a shadow monster covered in eyes. The cave, being recently revealed from a melting glacier, also contains a few untouched skulls with jars shoved in the mouths. Ashley, wanting to stay on the site and make a new discovery, decides to take one of the intact skulls. Her assistant, Henri, takes pictures of the site and tells her that they shouldn’t disturb the remains. Ashley prepares a crate and carefully places one of the skulls inside. They leave the cave, but having taken too long inside, have to hike back in the dark. Along the way Ashley keeps falling, but the two finally make it back to the research lab. Henri says he is going to have to report Ashley to their department head. It is late at night and so Ashley decides that she will examine the skull and jar before the department head gets there. She puts on gloves and begins looking at the skull and notices weird marks on it. She slowly pulls the jar from the teeth and unravels the leather surrounding it — even though the leather should not have survived that long. She accidentally cuts a hole in her glove, but doesn’t think much of it. As she opens the jar she is overcome with a sweet rotten smell and finds wet clumps inside the small container. She examines it and decides that it is bone marrow, most likely extracted from the broken bones in the cave. She puts everything away and when she takes off her glove she notices blood on her hands. She leaves the lab and waits for the department head to find her. She begins to feel cramps all over her body and thinks she must have hurt herself on the hike back from the cave. The department head comes to her and questions her about why she disturbed the site, but she leaves quickly because she is in so much pain. In her office her fingers begin to grow and she watches as the skin cannot contain her bones. All of her bones begin to get longer and larger. She feels a pull to the jar in the lab, but when she tries her key card she realizes that she has been locked out. She knows that she must return to the cave. She barely makes it up the mountain to the cave and runs into a shadow monster when she finally gets inside. She throws bones at the monster which seem to slow it down, but it gets closer and closer to her. She breaks another jar and eats the marrow inside, making her bones grow faster. It makes her feel stronger and she tries to escape the shadow monster again. She falls into a sink hole in the back of the cave and finds herself surrounded by others’ bones. She is not strong enough to pull herself out so she bites off her finger and eats her own marrow which gives her strength to climb up. She notices her bones growing around her, forming a sort of armor. She finally gets to the top of the hole and has to eat more of the marrow in the jars to fight the shadow monster. She manages to drive it back to the hole and collapse the roof so that the monster can’t get out. She collapses and worries about the marrow still in the lab being touched. Her bones keep growing until she is completely surrounded. She feels like finally nothing can harm or see her.
