Plot Summary
A dog wakes up and finds himself flying on a cloud into a crowded street he guesses is Coney Island. He is an Irish terrier with a deep sense of devotion to his owner, the Boss. He exits the cloud and is walking on glass floors with meadows all around and a busy street without any automobiles. He cannot figure out where he is. He sees a black shadowy figure and pounces on it. He gets himself into a wonderful catfight where he gets bloodier than ever and has an amazing time. The two come to a truce, and the cat helps him realize he is dead and in heaven. At first he dislikes the idea of being dead, but Heaven has its perks. The architect who designed Heaven was brought up with dogs and cats and made it from their perspective. He even included a damp, dark alley that the dogs and cats love, but that the angels argued was not suited for a celestial place. Still, with all its wonderful qualities, the terrier, Paddy, cannot imagine calling this place Heaven without his owner who is still alive in New York City. Many of the other dogs are owned by famous poets and literary figures who are also in heaven and take them on walks every evening. Paddy determines he must go home to the Boss and sneaks out fo the gates to heaven, jumping through the void between the heavenly clouds and earth, and launching back into his body, covered in red hot pain. ALl his pain ceases though when the Boss places his hand on Paddy's hand and praises him for pulling through his sickness to stay alive for his master.
