Plot Summary
A high school freshman goes to the Dungeon Master's house after school to play Dungeons and Dragons. The Dungeon Master is a senior in high school, and there are many rumors around school about him getting into trouble. Some students claim that he was recently hospitalized for mental health concerns. The Dungeon Master controls the stories in their games, often leading to the unfair deaths of the players' characters. His little brother Marco especially is killed frequently and usually in undignified ways. The Dungeon Master and Marco live with their father Dr. Varelli, who refers to them using strange nicknames including puppies and beauties, and their mother died when they were young. The boys gather one day to play a particularly exciting game. Instead of killing them off early, the Dungeon Master allows his playmates to find a dragon in a cave on top of a mountain. Most of the players take treasure and escape, but the freshman boy decides to fight the dragon, thinking that the Dungeon Master will let him survive. When his character is killed by the dragon, the boy grows frustrated. Soon after, the Dungeon Master mentions the younger sister of one of the boys, who died when she was a baby, and the boy begins to cry. The freshman boy gets angry and knocks part of the game over, lashing out at the Dungeon Master and calling him names. The boys begin to fight, and by the time the freshman finally leaves his wrist is broken and the Dungeon Master's head is bleeding. At home, the freshman boy's parents are worried about the older boy's influence on their son. His parents also tell him that money is tight and that he will need to get a job after his wrist heals. The boy joins a different Dungeons and Dragons group. This one is a school-sponsored club where the smart kids play, but he soon grows tired of it and stops going. When he is walking home from school one day, the freshman is approached by the Dungeon Master in his Corvette, and he offers him a ride. The Dungeon Master confirms that some of the rumors are true, including his hospitalization. When he gets dropped off at his house, the boy is shaking from nervousness, and the Dungeon Master offers somewhat of an apology. In the future, the Dungeon master may commit suicide, the boy whose sister died may end up in jail, and the freshman boy may be employee of the month at a fast food restaurant, but for now he only turns and walks inside.
