Plot Summary
Mike and Dana recently moved from Oregon to Arizona, hoping the new climate would lessen their son Cole's meltdowns. Cole is a D3, a robotic child, and he is prone to malfunctions, but Mike and Dana thought he had been improving up until now. When Mike receives a call from his neighbor telling him that Cole has had a meltdown, their fear comes bubbling back to the surface. Mike races over to his neighbor's house to find Cole shut down with one of his arms lying a foot away in the grass. Cole's friends look on as Mike restarts his son. Cole awakens, confused and panicked over his missing arm, but says goodbye to his friends and walks home with his dad. Back at home, Dana and Mike argue over the best course of treatment. Dana wants to give Cole a new unit, meaning a complete reset, but Mike knows that Cole's personality will essentially be destroyed. Later that night, while eating dinner, Cole has another meltdown and Mike shuts him off. The next morning Mike and Dana drive to the D-pediatric with Cole still powered down. The doctors reattach his arm and the family heads home. There, Dana and Mike discuss a possible divorce and the custody battle that would follow. Leaving Dana at home, Mike and Cole go to play catch at a local park. Cole's arm won't stop twitching and it gets so bad that they have to stop. Cole breaks down crying, fearing for his uncertain future.
