Aphra Marsh keeps a low profile at her job at Charlie Day's bookstore. After the horrors her parents and people were subjected to in internment camps for their Innsmouth look and connection to the deep one, Aphra fears any contact with the government. So she's shaken to the bone when well-intentioned FBI agent Ron Spector attempts to recruit her. The state has organized a hunt of mortal Aeonists believed to be dangerous, and Spector wants Marsh's help protecting the innocent by infiltrating their ranks.
Aphra vehemently refuses, haunted by the torture and horrific deaths her parents were subjected to. However, Spector reminds her that cooperation with the government that destroyed her people could actually save their lives. Reluctantly, she agrees to join the dangerous Aeonists for the FBI.
However, as soon as Aphra immerses herself in the group, she realizes they have none of the magic they claim to. Weak and misled mortals, they sacrifice their own in a futile hope they'll gain immortality. Aphra tells the FBI they're harmless, and her people are protected from future government camps. She reconnects with her spirituality after recognizing a ghost of the deep one's power in the misguided cultists.
