Plot Summary
On a flight on the way to a vacation in Florida, a forty-six-year-old man named Jacob notices how one of the flight attendants and another passenger behind his wife and him are pregnant. Cece, Jacob’s wife, has always wanted a baby, but they have not been able to conceive a child over the past fifteen years of marriage. Jacob remembers a woman telling them that they were too old to adopt a baby, and he also thinks of Crystal, their former neighbor, who was pregnant when she attempted suicide by jumping off a balcony. Even though having a child of her own has not been possible for Cece, she is very good with children. During the flight, she asks Jacob if he remembers when she was asked to look after a random eight-year-old girl during another flight because the girl’s mother thought she seemed responsible. Jacob thinks to himself that Cece has told this story many times. When the couple finally arrives at their destination, a theme park in Florida, Jacob wonders why Cece is looking around so much. He mentions to Cece that they could adopt an older child, to which Cece responds that she would not be able to handle an older child right away. Jacob thinks to himself that he doesn’t need a baby. That night, Jacob dreams about Crystal, who he secretly had an affair with prior to her jumping off the balcony—meaning that she was pregnant with his child at the time. In the dream, Crystal throws a party, and once Jacob realizes he is dreaming, he has sex with her. He soon wakes up to see that Cece is already awake, planning their day. He thinks back to the one time Cece was pregnant with his child, prior to their marriage. He had suggested an abortion and could not accompany Cece to the appointment because of work. During their day out, Jacob and Cece wait in line for food at the theme park, and Cece suddenly comments that Jacob doesn’t care about having a baby. He says that he only cares because she does, and she becomes upset. They watch people as they wait in line, and Cece focuses on a mother with two babies, one calm and the other unhappy. Cece approaches the babies, and Jacob begins to fear that she is going to kidnap one. As he watches her rocking the unhappy child in her arms, however, he decides that he will go through with any plan she has.
