Plot Summary
At the end of the summer, young lovers Carl and Irene spend their final night together, before Carl goes to university and Irene goes to a finishing school. They feel sad about their eventual parting but do not mention it. They have a picnic in the afternoon and go canoeing at nighttime. Carl steers the canoe up "Lovers' Lane," where Irene remarks on its beauty. Irene looks at Carl and is saddened thinking that he's going away the following day. However, she resolves to make the farewell as painless as possible. Irene finally brings up that this is their final night together. Carl wishes that they were going to the same place, but Irene knows how stubborn her father is. They both agree to study hard and make enough money so that they can get married right after college graduation. They exit the canoe and lay on a blanket on top of a hill. Carl tells Irene she has the prettiest hair ever. They go further uphill to watch the moon. At the hilltop, Irene tells Carl she wishes they could marry before he leaves, and Carl wistfully agrees. On the way back down, Irene wonders if any other woman has felt the way she does that night as if something is growing inside her and is about to burst. They lay back down on the blanket, and Irene suggests they take off their clothes and see each other that way. She suggests they will feel as if they're genuinely married. Carl agrees, and they undress. In awe, Carl tells Irene she is beautiful, and Irene feels like no one has ever felt the love she has for Carl. After they get dressed, they head out of the park. Irene looks at the spot where they laid and thinks to herself, "this is where I gave my heart away." As they exit the starry and peaceful park, Carl tells Irene he will write to her every day during college.
