Plot Summary
Harold is a gambling addict in New York City whose wife and young daughter left him several years ago. In order to pay off his mounting debts to Mr. Mo, a triad leader who runs an illicit gambling den, Harold works as a takeout deliveryman for Mr. Mo's Chinese restaurant, Happy Dumpling. But instead of food, each takeout container is used to deliver goods or collect money. One day, Mr. Mo sends Harold to an elderly man's apartment. When Harold opens the takeout container to reveal a pear, the man begins to cry and shake in fear. Later, Wen tells Harold that pears are taboo in Chinese culture, so the delivery was probably a warning or a threat. The next night, Harold watches Mr. Mo count out a large wad of cash. With no one else in the office, Harold briefly considers attacking Mr. Mo and stealing the money, but he resists the urge. He secretly wonders how long he will have to make the deliveries before he pays off his debt. On his way to collect money from a brothel, Harold sees a woman with a baby stroller, which reminds him of his daughter Cindy, who he hasn't seen in several years. He promises himself to change his life as soon as his debt is paid off to Mr. Mo. After collecting money from the brothel, Harold considers running off with it. He calls Wen, who warns him that someone is probably watching him. Wen promises to speak to Mr. Mo and try to speed up the end of Harold's assignment. Harold is tasked with delivering another pear, but the recipient beats him up. He returns to the restaurant and tells Mr. Mo what happened, but he doesn't seem to care. Bai, the kitchen's line cook, assures Harold that he shouldn't have to work for too much longer. Harold tells him that Wen is going to help him out, but Bai warns him that Wen is the reason that Harold is there in the first place. That night, Harold confronts Wen, who admits that he also had to work as a delivery man for Mr. Mo until the day he told him he could stop. Wen comes up with a plan to steal from Mr. Mo, allowing both Harold and Wen to start new lives elsewhere. But since Harold still feels betrayed, he tell Mr. Mo about Wen's plan. Mr. Mo tells him that he can go home that night after one final delivery. Elated, Harold travels with the takeout package to Coney Island. He arrives at the address, rings the doorbell, and opens the package, revealing a handgun. The door opens to reveal Wen, who sees the container and tells Harold that he hopes it's just a pear.
