Plot Summary
A jewelry store security guard with a criminal record and a dream to move to Mexico named D lives in a rundown apartment building full of Black, Mexican, and Chinese tenants, and a neighbor named J Bone. One day, J Bone’s cousin Leon is released from county jail and settles in J Bone’s room with two young girls. D meets Leon and the girls one night after his shift at the store and mentions offhand that he is a security guard at a jewelry store, but doesn’t carry a gun on duty. The next day, he sees the two girls browsing the store; D instantly recognizes that rather than looking to make a purchase, they are scoping the store to make a plan to rob it. The girls tell Leon that they should rob the place today, but Leon insists that it will be better to be patient. After his shift, D confronts Leon, telling him not to rob the store. Leon tells him that when they rob the store, he should just duck and cover. In preparation for Leon’s robbery, D tries to buy a gun of a guy a neighbor in his building knows. The gun dealer, however, runs off with the money and doesn’t give D a gun. Days pass before Leon and his crew try to rob the jewelry store. They try to break in on a Saturday after lunch, but the robbery is foiled as D recognizes them and the men fail to break through the store door. Nobody is harmed from the robbery except the store owner, Mr. M, who gets chest pains and is sent to the hospital. D goes back to his apartment building, expecting to be jumped by Leon and his posse, but lives to see the next day. The store owner’s son closes the shop for good as Mr. M stays in the hospital longer. The son gives D $2500 in cash as severance pay. D takes some of the money to have sex with a Mexican prostitute. After they finish, D tells the prostitute about his life and begins to cry. Months later, D walks back home from his new job guarding a dollar store when a homeless man asks him for money. D recognizes him as Leon, and gives him two dollars.
