Plot Summary
Elliot has dinner with his friend Austin just before Christmas time to check in on him after the death of his wife and son in a car crash. Austin seems unwell and complains about a ringing in his ears. He tells Elliot about his cousin who committed suicide when he was a teenager. Austin and this cousin were close until one day the cousin stood on top of a silo and said he had learned "The Word"- the thing used to bring life into the world by God himself. Shortly after this, the cousin lost his sanity and killed himself by jumping off of the silo. Austin finds the tower tarot card in his room and believes it is his cousin trying to communicate with him to teach him how to bring his dead wife, Liz, and their son William, back to life. Elliot is hesitant but agrees to travel to the family farm where the silo is with Austin, thinking it will bring him closure. Instead, Austin claims to hear the same sounds teaching him The Word as his cousin explained. They return back to the city and Austin emails Elliot later that evening saying he is doing well, reassuring him to not worry. Confused and scared, Elliot listens to his friend and tries to avoid seeing him. A year passes and it is Christmas time again. Elliot tries to reach out to Austin to check in but receives radio silence. He drives to his apartment and sees Liz and William in the window. He comes back the next day to find the building swarmed with police cars. He leaves the scene to drive out to the silo, certain he will find Austin there. When he enters the old abandoned farmhouse by the silo, he finds Liz's body. She speaks to him with a small voice that seems to have Austin's voice within it as well, and her head detaches itself from the body and begins glowing. He leaves and enters the silo where he finds Austin, who confesses that he has killed multiple women and children trying to form their body into Liz and William's so that he can have them back in his life in their resurrected form. He says he is trapped now and cannot escape the Word. Elliot tells Austin to teach him the Word, so that he can put Austin out of his suffering by reversing the process and allowing him to finally pass away and release his immortality he has gained through the word and his resurrection of people. Austin teaches him and passes away immediately, leaving Elliot to live with the curse of the Word and the upkeep of the silo where the voice of the Word lives.
