Plot Summary
Luke notes the differences between himself and his twin sister Laurel after they have survived a terrible accident. Specifically, he notes that she is not afraid of the water like he is and that she can also eat meat, while he has gone vegan. He stands in the back of a grocery store as he overhears two people talking about the accident and how much they are suspicious of Luke and his family. Luke gets angry at them and walks out of the store. Luke and his family are sitting in the car when they hit a long line of traffic. Laurel says that there has been a car accident and they decide to stop and get food. After they get back on the road they still have to wait a long time. Laurel watches as their car passes by the burnt car in the car accident and imagines the inside bodies woven together. Both of the twins feel like they are losing themselves, becoming part of the water, and Laurel does not recognize her own face in the mirror. The twins' parents are trying to get them to go back to college and so they leave boxes at their bedroom doors, but Luke and Laurel don’t seem interested. Luke watches as Laurel opens the front door and says she is leaving. Luke follows her and they discuss a time when they swore not to talk about the accident. They walk to the fens and Luke confesses that he ate a girl named Katie during the accident and that he sees her all the time now. Luke reminisces later about how he used to bully Katie and how terrible he feels that he ate her. He sees her face in the reflection of water. Luke and Laurel’s parents, Clara and Jay, are going to therapy and talk about how they don’t know how to comfort their kids. Clara says sometimes she thinks it would’ve been better if the kids had died in the accident, and Jay agrees that he thinks that too. Luke notices how tense it is inside the house and one days sees Katie distantly on a hill. He remembers how when the accident happened her body had been cut up by the blades of the boat and her body and blood had gone into his mouth when he screamed. He remembers the taste too well. Luke wakes up in bed and throws up after feeling Katie in his throat. One night Luke can’t sleep and so he goes to Laurel’s room and they hold hands as they watch TV. They agree never to speak about the accident. A woman named Patricia helps Jay and Clara move into a new cottage. She remarks at how Jay and Clara must be feeling now that their kids are dead from drowning out in the fens after going out there one day alone. Later, Clara and Jay leave the cottage they have moved into.
