Plot Summary
Ralph Wyman is unsure of what he wants to do with his life in college. But he eventually figures out he wants to be a teacher after having a good experience with a literature professor. Ralph ends up marrying a girl from his Chaucer class named Marian. One night, after grading papers, Marian confirms Ralph’s suspicions that she cheated on him two years ago. Distraught, Ralph leaves his house and goes to a bar and leaves after several drinks. Ralph then walks to another bar where he plays a few rounds of poker. After leaving that bar, he is mugged on his way to get something to eat. Ralph is picked up by a police officer but is unable to identify the man that mugged him from the portfolio that the officer presents. After refusing the officer's ride home, Ralph makes his way to the hospital where he is given some bandages. Ralph then decides to walk home. His house is quiet, but he is shortly greeted by his children. He decides to go into the bathroom and lock himself in. Marian comes to the door and tries to coax him out but he instead bathes. After coming out of the bathroom, Ralph goes to his bedroom and lies on his bed. After a while, Marian joins him and spoons him. Eventually, Ralph turns and meets her gaze. He stares into her eyes and sees himself and notices the changes happening inside him.
