Plot Summary
Don washes the rental station wagon with his two kids, Geoffrey and Lisbeth, and his new wife, Selena. He is hoping the activity will be a step towards the kids accepting Selena as a new parent. Recently, Don has been passing out from time to time, but he hasn't told anyone about it. He feels great and stable in the island air they stand in.
The four of them landed at the island’s only airport, got a rental car and drove to their reserved villa. It was Selena’s idea to wash the car, an activity Don thinks his ex-wife would disapprove of. As they’re washing the car, a police officer pulls up and explains that the island is facing a water shortage. Don apologizes and the officer writes an expensive ticket.
At a restaurant that night, Don notices how other men admire Selena. As the family sits together, the couple tells the children how they met in Manhattan on a rainy day. Selena tells the children how Don bought her expensive gifts when they dated and Don promises the children they will stay married forever.
At a nearby table, a man named Oslov yells at a waiter for struggling to open a wine bottle and flaunts his title. As the family eats soup, the man continues to yell, finally grabbing the bottle out of the waiter’s hand. The waitress comes back to the table and tells them the soup is made of “the little ones,” an island specialty. At the table behind the family, the waiter spills soup on Oslov and he demands to speak to a manager. The waitress brings the next course, shrimp, to the family’s table. As the commotion behind them continues, Don tells his kids to not behave like Oslov and the same police officer shows up to handcuff the waiter and take him away. As he does so, he glares at Don.
When the family leaves the restaurant, they are approached by a young boy named Pooko who claims to be the son of the waiter who was just arrested. Pooko begs for food. Don tells him to go to the restaurant and they drive away. Behind them, Pooko chases the car. When they get to their villa, Pooko is not far behind and they run into the house. Lisbeth begs her dad to help the boy.
The family brings the boy inside and offers him food as he tells them how he drinks pig juice. Lisbeth and Pooko play in the water together while Geoffrey sits off to the side. Selena spots a line of smoke spiraling through the sky that knocks over an umbrella and an outdoor grill. The diving board blows up in the air and tiles rain over Don’s head. Selena jumps into the pool and brings the kids over to the shallow end and billows of white steam flow off the top of the pool.
Selena pulls all the kids out and burns her forearm in the steam. The water begins to escape through the cracked tiles and the water level declines rapidly. A dark object rests in the bottom of the pool with Cyrillic emblazoned on the side. The sheriff appears again and accuses Don of destroying the pool. Selena explains that the object is likely a Russian satellite and that they did not cause the damage but the sheriff still writes them a ticket.
The next morning, Selena still has the burn and they decide to go to the beach. Geoffrey inspects something in the waves as Don goes out for a swim. Later, they make sandwiches together on the blanket and are surprised to see three approaching monkeys. The monkeys beg for food and Lisbeth throws a chunk of fruit at the first monkey. Don and Selena try to discourage Lisbeth, but she continues to throw the animals food. Suddenly, the lead monkey bares its fangs and jumps on Lisbeth’s head and scrapes out one of her eyes. The monkey leaves with the other two monkeys.
The family rushes Lisbeth to the emergency room where the doctor tells them she’s lost her eye but the other one remains untouched. Don leaves to go to a bar while Selena looks after the kids. Lisbeth tells Selena she wants to see her real mom and Selena tries to win back her trust. Suddenly, Pooko runs into the room crying “Danger!” and points out a snake. Selena tries to kill it, but it bites her in the process and she collapses. Don moves towards her while Lisbeth runs playfully around the pool.
