Cleotha and her husband, Jodey, are driving to Roswell. It's a drive they've made before, but this time they're on a tragic mission - burying their baby. As the car winds through a peach orchard, Cleotha reflects on the hope she once had as a young woman, the grief she cannot imagine overcoming, and the sudden joy she finds in the beauty of her surroundings.
Jodey struggles to overcome his anger at the world after their child's death. The baby was playing in some long grass he kept forgetting to cut when sparks blew on the wind into the weeds and set them on fire. The child burned to death.
The sad family is accompanied by their other child's schoolteacher. Together, they carry the coffin to its final resting place and bury it. At last, Cleotha, who was unable to cry along their journey, breaks down into tears.
