Plot Summary
One winter, a man’s parents, Hannah and Dodd, visit him in Sri Lanka. Despite having never been to Sri Lanka before, Hannah and Dodd are excited and content to visit their son. At Hannah’s request, they take a trip to the botanical gardens, where they meet a young Sinhalese man named Justus Gonzag, or Sonny, who adamantly tries to befriend them and invite them to his house. While Hannah converses with him, seemingly not suspecting a thing, Sonny makes her son uncomfortable by his insistence that they spend time together and visit his home. Sonny claims that he simply wants to give them an autographed book of poetry and reveals that he has already told their driver to meet them at the house. Reluctantly, the family follows Sonny, and he shows them into a small, red room with a large bed. Sonny leaves the room, and the family considers escaping. When Sonny returns, he is breathing heavily, but he shows them around the house and the unkempt lawn. When the family leaves, their driver is waiting outside like Sonny promised. A month later, a friend reveals that Sonny Gonzag constantly shows people his home because on the day of his wedding, he stumbled upon his best man sleeping with his wife-to-be in the red room. The friend explains that Sonny murdered the two of them and then spent a few weeks in a mental hospital. Hannah and Dodd later express to their son that they look forward to returning to New York, and he decides not to tell them the truth about Sonny Gonzag. Hannah exclaims that what someone doesn’t know can’t hurt them.
