Plot Summary
The morning after their drunken hook-up, Nita asks Maddie if she can record an interview with her. Nita explains that she’s doing a sociological/artistic project documenting the people she has sex with. Maddie goes along with Nita’s questioning at first, but when Nita asks about the scars on Maddie’s back, Maddie becomes uncomfortable. Nevertheless, Nita and Maddie hit it off and continue to see each other. During their first date—which Nita also records—Maddie divulges that she is from a small mountain town in Washington State, and that she just moved to Chicago this year. Nita asks about Maddie’s scars again; Maddie reveals that she got them in a car accident, then commands Nita to turn off the recording. Stalking Maddie online, Nita is unable to find any pictures of her prior to 2009, nor can she locate Maddie’s hometown on any map or atlas. However, Nita comes across a news article detailing Maddie’s car accident. Another girl, Emily, was in the car with Maddie at the time, but Emily disappeared at the site of the crash and has been missing ever since. Maddie records her own messages for Nita, in which she reveals that she hears the voice of some supernatural entity. Maddie invites Nita to her home in Washington for Christmas. When they arrive, they both start to cough and choke intermittently. Nita meets Maddie’s mom, Evie, who tells her that Maddie’s dad grew up in the town, moved away, was compelled to move back, and died soon after returning. Nita drives to visit the site of Maddie’s car accident, but her car gets stuck in wet pavement. A town resident offers to give her a ride there, but when she questions him about the accident and Maddie’s father, he warns her not to get too involved in the town’s history. When Nita returns to the house, she finds Maddie coughing intensely, choking on what appears to be feathers and mud. Evie comforts Maddie through the episode until she vomits up the dirt. Nita is horrified, says she can taste the dirt in her own mouth, and tells Maddie she wants to leave immediately. Maddie agrees, and the two begin heading back, Maddie driving the car. After giving Nita a cryptic goodbye, Maddie accelerates the car until it flies over the guardrails. A month later, back in Chicago, Nita prepares to move in with her mom; in a leg brace after the car accident, she cannot handle her apartment’s stairs well. She leaves the recorder in her room to record any strange sounds while she’s gone. After Nita leaves, a voice asks, “Are you sure you want to hear what we have to say?”
