The Edison Star Hotel will be hosting two crew members going to Mars pre-departure. Benny, the hotel manager, is stressed out trying to plan everything.
Emily takes care of Moolie, her mother, because she often forgets things, and has other physical and mental health problems. She used to be a physicist, and analyzed the Galaxy crash site, which was a failed mission to Mars. Emily does not know who her father is, though Moolie tells Emily that a book they own, The Art of Space Travel, belonged to him. He was part of the New Dawn mission to Mars, but he gave up on his dreams too soon. Emily starts trying to identify who her father is. She retraces Moolie’s past to Hamburg in 2047, where both she and some of the Mars team were stationed – three of them men. She studies the three men’s lives for evidence.
Back at the hotel, a news crew wants to interview Emily. After a single unexpected question, the interviewer asks Emily about her mother, knowing she was part of the forensic investigation team that analyzed the Galaxy crash site and had worked in radioactive material.
Emily brings The Art of Space Travel to work to be signed by the two crew members leaving for Mars, putting it in her locker. Later, Emily gets a call that Moolie was found lying out in front of the house. She calls Benny and tells him she has to leave immediately. He leaves his meeting to meet her. As she struggles to open her locker, it suddenly gives way, letting everything pour out.
Emily goes to the hospital and finds Moolie feeling okay. Moolie tells Emily to talk to Benny. At the hotel, Emily finds Benny with The Art of Space Travel in his hands, and she realizes the book is his. Benny is Emily’s father.
