Plot Summary
A man boards a plane from America to a country in Central America in first-class and fearfully waits for any of the boarding passengers to pull out a knife and attempt to murder him. He recalls getting the phone call and refusing but the man on the other end had told him he would be going anyway.
The white Mississippian beside him on the flight is wearing a beige suit and says she’s going to visit her daughter who’s about to marry into a Spanish family that owns three coffee plantations. He had told his wife he wouldn’t travel after she got sick but this wasn’t possible with his work and he traveled to different countries' capitals to sort out their financial problems. Outside of the airport, he is followed by two young people travelling together, Allie and Billy, who continue to ask questions about the city’s transportation. The travelers follow him in his cab to the hotel and on the way Allie tells a story about almost getting killed in St. Petersburg by a cabbie, a story he assumes is a myth. He tells them about his line of work and they listen disapprovingly.
In the hotel room, he found a gun in the bedside table, as requested. When the bellboy comes to the door, he tells the man that Allie and Billy are in the bar waiting for him. They invite him to dinner and make him pay for their drinks. The restaurant doubles as a brothel and the employees eye the three white people. Allie and Billy eat like they haven’t eaten in weeks and Allie asks for money, which the man gives. Allie tells the man she disapproves of his job and he is reminded of his own daughters’ disapproval. The two get into a loud fight and cause a disruption in the restaurant. Billy watches on and then tries to calm her down. The man worries about his dying wife at home who he has left in the care of his daughter.
Two men join the table and the man notices that they have knives tucked into their belts. The men sweep the two young Americans away into a back room and the man follows them concernedly. In the back room, a mixed group of people drink, smoke and dance. One of the men grabs Allie and drags her up on stage with a naked woman and she begins to whip the woman. The man runs away, realizes he is leaving them for dead and continues on with his work trip.
