Plot Summary
Trudy, a high school teacher of gifted students, is driving with her husband, Karl, who appears to have Alzheimer's. Her husband used to be a vocal climate activist. While he is driving, they nearly get into an accident. On the road, Trudy sees her student, Pretty, who is known for wearing extremely skimpy clothing and not paying attention in class. Pretty appears to be driving out of town. One night, Trudy sits at home with Karl and grades one of Pretty's quizzes to find that the girl, while having no talent for school, is actually a very gifted artist. Pretty stops coming to school one day and Trudy assumes that she finally dropped out. Trudy later learns that Pretty has disappeared. A security tape reveals her getting into a car with two men--the same car in which Trudy saw Pretty the other day. Students become obsessed with locating Pretty and trying to save her. Trudy and Karl go to the police station and are told that troopers have located the two men. Both are unarmed and one appears to want to speak with officers. It becomes clear that the men killed Pretty, kidnapping her while she was out buying cereal and cigarettes. Karl surprises Trudy by talking to officers about what he saw on the road that day. He gives the officers extremely vivid detail about the men he saw behind the wheel. Trudy thinks back on all the times she has treated Karl like a child because of his deteriorating condition. Pretty's mother and niece are brought into the station to be given the terrible news; an officer turns to Trudy and asks her to confirm that she saw Pretty being driven out of town and decided not to tell anyone. Karl is shocked by this, as he did not know that Trudy saw Pretty in the car. Karl dives deeper into his activist work with his newfound lucidity, but Pretty's relatives act hatefully towards him whenever he walks by. He is terrified of having to testify, in case his words cause the two men to be executed.
