A Kenyan man receives a visit from his estranged son, who is there to drive him to the spaceport. From there, he will leave for a new space colony, away from colonized Africa.
The father and son have a discussion about the state of Kenya, and the father argues that Kenya lives on in his mind, and that to leave for a new colony is not abandoning his home. The son is conflicted, and they both lament the Europeanization of Kenya. The father reveals that his role on the new colony, Kirinyaga, will be as a traditional mundumugu — a witch doctor — to pass on tribal customs, and that he will take his son's African name. Suddenly, the son spots two jackals, and is shocked because there have been no animals in Kenya for over twenty years. The father informs his son that the government is building a game facility for them to live in. The last thing the father sees as the spaceship takes off is his son, but he thinks of the two jackals, and how he will soon understand what it will be like to live in an artificial enclosed land and be treated like an animal.
