Plot Summary
Joshua and his dad attempt to beat a game called Legend of Silence. The goal of this game is to lose every worldly possession and reach nirvana. The more items that Alicia, the main character, comes to possess, the weaker she becomes. Joshua and his father navigate through this fictional world with Alicia during their evenings. They map out their discoveries along the way. Meanwhile, Joshua’s dad is financially unstable, and the gas goes out in their apartment. Later, the two have to move into a smaller apartment, to have “more money to play with." In this smaller apartment, Joshua’s dad is able to afford to rent more movies and pay the utilities on time. Joshua tries to listen in on his dad’s phone conversations as he wonders where his mother might be. Eventually, the two reach nirvana and beat the game. The game gives them an elusive, mysterious message — it tells them that they have reached nirvana, where they will forget fear, forget love, and evolve into an existence that is no longer “them” at all. Now that they have beaten the game, Joshua wonders what he and his father will do together.
