Plot Summary
Ann is going to a talk being given by her friend Christine with Christine's mother Lucia who just flew into New York. They talk about old trips to Italy and Christine's love life.
In the theater, Lucia talks about a strange story of a man whose wife dies after he sleeps with his neighbor. Christine gives her talk, and Ann thinks about their time in college together. Both had been sleeping with the same married professor, but only just found out about the other.
After the talk ends, Lucia is very negative about Christine. Ann gets defensive. Lucia then tells Ann that there's even more to the story about the neighbor and dead wife, that she is now having an affair with that neighbor herself. She plans on telling Christine, but wants Ann there to witness the shock of the story and be an impartial third party. Ann refuses and walks out.
Later that night, Ann calls the wife of the professor she'd had an affair with. Ann lies about the necklace and says that she was the one who sent it and had found it on the floor of his classroom and sent it back because she'd considered selling it in desperation. Then she goes to bed.
