Plot Summary
Nine-year-old Robert (“Frisco”) is very close to his older brother, Carlton, who is seven years his senior. The two drink and do drugs together at a cemetery nearby, and they fantasize about living in Woodstock, New York. However, for the time being, they're stuck in Cleveland. One day when Robert is making his way to the cemetery, he finds his brother with his girlfriend having sex. When his brother spots him, he winks and smiles at him. Later that night, Carlton says he is thankful that Robert was there, saying it felt right, and that he would find a girl for Robert to have sex with. Their parents throw a dinner party with their coworkers one night, but Carlton has several of his teenage friends crash the party, including his girlfriend. By smooth-talking his mother, Carlton convinces her to let them stay and play some of their young music, such as Janis Joplin. The parents send Robert to bed while the rest of them party and dance with the teens. Robert hears one of the teens say that they see a UFO, prompting the entire party to peak out from the sliding glass door to the backyard. Robert sneaks out of his room to see too, just in time to see Carlton walking back inside from the backyard when something crashes, sending broken glass into Carlton's neck. Though the party tries to stop the blood flow, he dies while his girlfriend holds him and his parents apply pressure to his neck. The girlfriend is an utter wreck and breaks down at the funeral. A few months later, she moves away with her parents. The parents feel sorry for her, sympathizing with her because of the trauma she endured at such a young age. Robert could not confront her, could not even write her name.
