Vlad is an immortal vampire who has learned to pretend he is a human, hiding his teeth with dentures, carefully tampering down his supernatural strength and speed, and never hunting humans. This has been the case ever since his wife, Sarah, tracked him down and, prepared to try to kill him, wooed him instead. The two have an elementary-school-aged son named Paul. They want a semblance of normalcy for Paul.

Paul is doing poorly in school so Sarah sends Vlad to speak with his teacher, a beautiful woman who Vlad sees as the perfect prey, nothing but trouble for him. He offers to tutor Paul and meets with her weekly. He begins stalking her, often coming home late and arousing Sarah's suspicions.

One day, Vlad plans to kill the teacher. He can't get her scent out of his mind and thinks, just this once. However, he ends up turning away and resolving not to. When he does, he sees a glint of glass blocks away. He arrives to find his Sarah disassembling a sniper she had set up to kill Vlad with if he had followed through. He apologizes.

Sarah encourages him to be there for his son more, and to be his truer self while still refraining from killing humans. The next time, in the park, playing catch, Vlad throws the ball inhumanly far and fast and his son blurs through the air to catch the ball, which breaks on impact. The two start laughing and dart around the park at faster-than-human speeds together. That night, Vlad kisses Sarah back with his real teeth.
