Plot Summary
Humans have been dying for as long as they have existed. While most human souls do not remain, some do as ghosts. They watched as the world of the living ended at the hands of the living. They stayed behind on the ruined planet for reasons unknown to even themselves. Now that there is no longer any life, the ghosts simply watch and exist, wondering why. One day, an alien vessel lands on Earth. All the ghosts excitedly go to the landing site to see what these visitors are like. The aliens begin to look at the relics of humanity. The ghosts are unable to affect the material world too much, but being able to manipulate electromagnetic waves to an extent, they can help the aliens by creating quick flashes of light to point out certain objects. and guide them. Eventually, the convoy reaches a building that serves as a time capsule, sealed during the twilight of humanity. The aliens enter the building and the ghosts are excited to see the reactions of the visitors to the legacy of humans. The aliens experience various aspects of human culture such as music recordings, various accessories, and wine. The aliens eventually play a video recording depicting clips of humans doing everyday things, like going to class and wedding celebrations. The ghosts are all very emotional at this point. They notice that the aliens are making noises, before realizing that the aliens are mocking the humans. The aliens leave the building to set up camp for the night. The ghosts observe them in fury before attacking. Only one of the aliens escapes in terror. The ghosts rejoice as they discover a new purpose for their existence: to stay and protect this world that they built and destroyed, where they lived and died, until the universe fades.
