Plot Summary
John, still catching his breath from nearly missing his flight and having to run through the airport, sits down next to an unassuming woman. The woman, Lorraine, is headed to Kansas where she was born. They soon find out they're both from small suburbs in Minnesota and went to very similar colleges. Lorraine reveals she is an alcoholic and that college exacerbated her illness. As they continue to chat, John is reminded of an old friend from college, Patty. Going back-and-forth from plane to college, John thinks about his time with Patty and presses Lorraine more on her alcoholism. Patty, madly in love with John, was a mysterious girl. Despite liking her company, when Patty told John how she felt, that love went unrequited. One night, Patty got very drunk at a local college bar. When she spotted John at the bar, she begged him to sleep with her and confessed her love to him again. John said no but Patty persisted and grabbed him without his consent. John shoved her off of him and when Patty stepped back, she looked at John with her eyes full of hatred. Later, a friend of John's came to get him, mentioning something about Patty. In a bedroom, John found Patty being raped by multiple men. John then raped Patty. Back on the plane, Lorraine tells John that her biggest mistakes in life were a bad relationship and not working for a band that later became famous. John then admits his biggest mistake was raping someone. Lorraine freezes. She ignores him the rest of the flight and, upon landing, hurries past him. John apologizes to her departing silhouette.
