Mildred is an aging woman with worsening Alzheimer's. Her family employs a Medical Care Android to take care of her. The Android has neural networks that allow it to emulate human beings and empathize with them through its empathy net.
The Android often impersonates Paul, Mildred's son, but it changes between impersonations to accommodate Mildred's memory and desires. It talks to her as Henry, her deceased husband; Anna, her granddaughter; and sometimes, as Paul's wife Susan. One afternoon, the real Susan and her daughter Millie arrive for a visit, and though Mildred does not remember Millie, she is glad to see them. But things go downhill part-way through the visit when Mildred insists that the Android is the real Susan, and that Susan herself must leave. Eventually, the Android goes outside with Millie, becoming 'Mr. Robot' and playing with the girl in Mildred's garden.
One evening, fire alarms go off suddenly in Mildred's house. The Android impersonates Paul, insisting that Mildred get in her wheelchair so it can carry her to safety, but she refuses — she doesn't recognize Paul, and is afraid to come with the Android. It grabs her body in a blanket and crashes through a window to escape the fire.
At the hospital, the Android is Henry, holding Mildred's hand at her bedside. Mildred is dying; her body is shutting down after the injuries it suffered in the fire, and her family filters through to say goodbye to her — Paul, Anna, Susan, and Millie take turns with Mildred and Android-Henry. When Mildred dies, the Android ceases to be Henry; it is nobody.
Paul and Susan decide to keep the Android for potential future use. It sleeps most of the time, but occasionally it's brought out to play with Millie as Mr. Robot. Sometimes, it impersonates Mildred for Millie while they play together.
