A young woman works as a mapmaker, and despite her talent, she is largely dismissed by her male counterparts because of her gender, age, and preference for maps that are more beautiful. The only other mapmaker that treats her with respect is an older man who she falls in love with, but he leaves her romantically because he decides he is too old for her. They continue to talk on the phone, and one day, the man recommends some maps that are a fair distance from her. After making sure they’re maps she would want to buy, she closes her business for several days and leaves to see the maps. She plans to only stay for a few nights. The first night she arrives, she traces the steps to the mapmaker’s house. Once she finds the place, she sees the lights are on and tries to enter. A cat pops its head in the window and shakes its head no. She then leaves to go to a pub where a man tries to get her attention and she ignores him. The next morning, she goes back to the map store and the man at the pub the night before is the man who runs the map store. She starts to feel attracted to him. He shows her two maps that are incredibly beautiful and then tells her since she appreciates maps, he wants to show her a third map that isn’t for sale. He shows her a map that she immediately wants. It’s an intricate drawing of South America with an added island that has details of a man and a woman having sex. She realizes the map salesman doesn’t see this and immediately offers to buy it. He tells her it isn’t for sale, but after her persistence he lists an enormous sum. She agrees and pools together the money that night. She realizes she cannot wait until the morning to get the map and comes to his house that night. He asks her what she sees in the map that he doesn’t see and the two of them end up having sex.
