Vasuki, a Sri Lankan woman with a young son and daughter has witnessed her country's descent into dangerous chaos. As a child, Vasuki's father was one of the disappeared -- one of many men to be accused of insurgency, forced to join the military, and then never return home.
After a series of roundups by soldiers, Vasuki worries for her young son Poniah's future. The men in the village are at a high risk of becoming one of the many ‘disappeared.’ One day, Vasuki sees a young Sri Lankan man being dragged behind a military vehicle. She decides then and there to ask her brother, Nadesan, to take her son Poniah and get him out of the country.
Nadesan takes Poniah to the capital in the middle of the night. The next morning, soldiers surround the school. Vasuki is relieved her son and brother aren't there to be taken.
