A brother-in-law lives with a family, although they don’t know whose brother-in-law he is or how he came to be there. His presence is hardly noticeable, slipping out of rooms when they enter, his breath the only noise he makes. He barely makes an impact on their food. When he tries to pay them for his residency, even his money fades away before they can take it. One winter, the cold was too much for him and he began to dissipate, but his presence was so intangible that the family wasn’t sure if he had left. He had dissolved into vapor in the guest bedroom, and they shook him out and wiped him away without knowing even where he had gone.
