W.H. Auden spends the night at a friend’s house, and despite his discomfort he doesn’t want to disturb his hosts. He takes down the curtains and lays them over himself for an extra layer of comfort and heaviness allows him to sleep peacefully. Another night, there are no curtains, so he lays the hall carpet over himself and allows it to soothe his uneasiness into sleep.
