Plot Summary
There is a dragon named Griaule that fell into a comatose state when hit by a wizard long ago. The wizard was supposed to kill the dragon but messed up the spell causing the dragon to simply fall into a deep sleep. As a result, the dragon was in the space of villages, obstructing the people's way of life. the citizens wanted to find a way to get rid of the dragon, but have failed in all of the plans. Then, one day a young man named Meric gave a suggestion. He suggests that the village cover t the dragon with paints that are toxic to it. This way the dragon will die without having to cast spells or use swords as previous warriors have attempted. Also, the dragon may not attack the people as they work if they are careful and quiet. The only catch to the plan is that it will take some time, as in a few decades, for the paint to set in enough to actually poison the creature. The city's leaders did not exactly agree, so Meric went to look and size up the beast. When he arrived at the creatures resting place, he was astonished, but even more peculiar was the dragon's eyes. The dragon's eyes opened and Meric looked directly into them having visions of memories, his as well as other people's. Flash forward a little and Meric finds himself a female companion by his side. Unfortunately, she is married to another man but does not love him. Instead, she loves Meric. Together they steal moments and make love in a cave-like area under the dragon's wing. One day, her husband finds them and chases after the two into the dangers of the "cave." Whilst running, the two stumble upon the corpse of the wizard who put Griaule in this state long ago. Unfortunately, their awe caused the husband to find them and fight against Meric for the woman's heart. As the husband is wrestling with Meric, he is suddenly killed by Jarcke, the mayoress of the village. Meric's beloved has run away for a new start, leaving Meric alone to do his work and kill the dragon. Flash forward again and Meric is older, weaker, and carries a cane with him. He goes into the city to talk to the military about their ideas to kill the dragon. The military has decided to sign an order to take a break from painting the dragon for the season and continue later on in the year. Meric sees that the military has emblems of the dragon on their flags, uniforms, and badges and is concerned as to why. Meric claims that the military has no knowledge of what the dragon is capable of and what it represents. In a fit of anger, Meric leaves and heads toward the dragon when he spots a young girl. He sits and talks to her, soon she reveals what she has seen in the dragon's eye. She states she saw the memory of Meric's lost love and expresses that his lover felt the same way about him as he did her. Content with this revelation, Meric continues to sit with the girl. They are quiet when the girl exclaims that the dragon has finally died. Meric is just as surprised, and as the girl runs to tell the villages, he hides knowing that the citizens will soon find and pester him. He runs under the wing of the beast and lies down beside it.
