Plot Summary
Hank Crute is an 84-year-old resident at the Morning Has Broken nursing home. He's one of few residents who can still walk without assistance, but he struggles with memory loss. One afternoon, he runs into a fellow resident, Sylvia, who invites him to go see a movie with her. Instead, he returns to his room to rest. Hank is startled to find a strange woman in his room. She introduces herself as Dr. Landis and tells him that they've met before. Dr. Landis performs a memory test, which Hank fails. Notably, he cannot remember his wife's name or whether she is still alive. Dr. Landis tells him that he probably failed the test because he forgot to take his medications, which prompts Hank to take the pills he sees in his pill container. As they wait for the pills to kick in, Dr. Landis shows Hank a letter in his own handwriting, where he explains his decision to end his life if he fails the memory test. Dr. Landis tells Hank that he contacted her employer, Timely Endings, two years ago to discretely facilitate his death in the event that his memory should severely fade. Hank panics and finally remembers his wife's name, but he finds himself unable to speak as the pills take control. In the weeks that follow Hank's death, Sylvia takes the news particularly hard. She frequently talks about the fact that she was the last person to see Hank alive, and it's clear that she had strong feelings for him. Sylvia begins spending most of her days alone in her room, reminiscing about Hank, until she is one day visited by a woman she doesn't recognize.
