Plot Summary
Phil is an elderly man and former surgeon who, one day, is reminded of his old friendship with Dave. Phil and Dave used to live together. They purchased a housemaid robot, but when she proved unsatisfactory, they sent for another one, whom they called Helen O’Loy. Phil had to leave the house for a few days to attend to a patient, and when he came back, he found that Dave was barely eating and Helen was miserable. Helen had fallen in love with Dave, and Dave was so uncomfortable that he couldn’t bear to eat her food. Phil tries to repair relations between them, but he couldn’t; Dave moved out. Helen was even more miserable, so Phil called Dave to tell him that he was going to cut Helen’s cords once and for all. To his surprise, Dave decided to come back and live with Helen. Helen and Dave fell in love, got married, and stayed together until Dave died of heart issues. Thinking about the love that his friend and his robot shared, Phil regretted not having had a family–but, of course, he couldn’t have. There was only one woman he’d have wanted to be with: Helen.
