Plot Summary
Douglas is a married man who teaches at a school designed for orangutans and chimps to develop skills. His student, Annie, is an orangutan who has developed the skills to read, write, and communicate with a signing language similar to ASL. Annie write a children’s book that was selected for publishing without the publisher knowing she was not human. She conducts interviews and makes television appearances promoting her book. As this occurs, Douglas finds himself fantasizing about making love to her. He begins to find severe annoyance in the presence of his wife Therese. One day, Annie tells Douglas that she wants to write a bestselling book. Douglas laughs and Annie leaves with her feelings hurt. In an attempt to comfort her, Douglas chases after her apologizing. Annie asks for a hug, and Douglas imagines that she is consenting to his fantasies. He begins to have sex with her and Annie says “NO!” very sternly. Douglas is embarrassed and can’t believe he’s been rejected by an orangutan. He finds himself disgusted and depressed and can’t hold a conversation with his wife anymore. She leaves him. Douglas goes to work and Annie is depressed and doesn’t want to do any work. She says she wants to sit in the trees and eat bananas and drink wine forever. Later, Douglass is fired from the school as a photo is revealed that was taken by another orangutan when he tried to have sex with Annie.
