Plot Summary
After she caught her husband in bed with another woman, Martha filed for divorce, and, six-months-later, she hops on a plane to Hawaii for a lucid dreaming seminar. When she arrives, she tours Pearl Harbor, and heads back to Kalani, the resort which hosts the seminar. There, Dr. Stephen DuBois, the psychiatrist who runs the show, begins his presentation. Martha heads back to her room, equipped with special goggles and galantamine that are supposed to help her achieve lucid dreaming. She falls asleep quickly, but the goggles wake her up in the middle of the night. She hears rain, but falls back asleep. The next morning, the resort is abuzz with the news that the nearby volcano erupted last night. Mystified that she missed it, Martha spends the rest of the day trying to make up for her bad night's sleep. That night, she dreams of her ex-husband and, by morning, decides to skip the sleep seminar and motorbike to the Volcano National Park. She makes conversation at a bar with a retired geologist and then goes to admire the crater. Rather than head back to the resort, she returns to the bar. The geologist is still there and they drink together. Drunk, she decides to stay the night at the hotel but gets lonely in her given suite. She finds the geologist and they have sex.
