Plot Summary
Amanda and her boyfriend Grant are staying with her old friend Genevieve for a vacation in France. Unlike Genevieve, who had an easy upbringing and a rich husband, Amanda has always struggled to make ends meet and this will be her first vacation in years. When Amanda is not around, Genevieve and Grant make plans to sleep together. Genevieve’s own husband, Manfred, has fallen gravely ill in recent years, and her son Leo has some issues of his own. Leo has taken a great liking to Amanda and hopes to go with her when she leaves. Over lunch, Amanda and Genevieve discuss plans for Mina, Amanda’s niece, to arrive and take over as Leo’s babysitter. Genevieve admits that her family is actually going bankrupt, and the house they are staying in belongs to her sister-in-law. Meanwhile, Grant and Manfred also share an honest conversation while driving together. Grant says that he does not see Amanda fitting into his future since he was recently accepted into a prestigious law school. He has not broken the news to her yet and tells Manfred not to say anything. Amanda and Genevieve pick Mina up from the airport, and both women are shocked by how gorgeous she has become. Genevieve makes a comment about the darker tone of her skin compared to when she was a baby, and Mina straightforwardly says that she is Black. After everyone returns home, Leo runs off to play on his own. He visits the dead sparrow he found earlier that day and sets it on fire. Mina comes to fetch him, and he happily welcomes the attention she offers. The two couples chat while waiting for their food to cook. When their conversation takes on a sour mood, Mina watches from afar and questions how they can be so angry in such a beautiful time and place. Unlike them, she plans to seize the beauty and opportunities of France and permanently leave her dreary life back home.
