Plot Summary
In the modern world, Harold Shea works with psychologist Reed Chalmers. Chalmers believes people want to live in parallel universes, and the psychologist has created a system that allows that person to be projected into the other world. Shea, who is unhappy with his life, wants to be transported to a world with Irish mythology. Sadly, he accidentally gets transported to a world of Old Norse mythology. The world is on the verge of Ragnarök, which means the doom of the Gods. Additionally, any tools from the modern world, such as matches, don't work. However, magic exists in this world. As Shea stumbles through this new universe, he meets with the Norse Gods, and the Gods believe he is a warlock. As a result, one of the Norse Gods, Loki, forces Shea to work for him. There, Shea learns that the Norse Gods have a low chance of winning the war since they don't have their magic weapons, Thor's hammer and Frey's sword. Giants, the Gods' enemies, have stolen the two weapons. After the meeting, Shea and the Norse Gods, Thor, Loki, and Thjalfi, set on a quest to return the weapons from the enemies. They go to the Frost Giant's fortress, and upon arrival, the giants say the Gods can inspect their fort if they engage in a series of contests. The Gods agree, believing it will be easy to defeat the giants in games such as an eating contest. Sadly, the Gods underestimate their opponents and lose every challenge. It appears the Gods will never find their weapons until Shea realizes that the enemies have disguised the weapons as arrows. The Gods retrieve their equipment, and a fight between the Gods and Giants ensues. Ultimately, the Giants defeat the Gods, and they are locked away in prison. Shea helps the Gods escape by tricking the guard into thinking he is a warlock. Shea tells the Giant that he'll shrink his nose so he looks more handsome if the Giant allows them to leave. Surprisingly, Shea has developed the ability to use magic and shrinks the Giant's nose. The Gods and Shea escape with the weapons, and Shea uses his magic to create flying brooms to help them escape. They reach Odin, who has is consulting with a prophet, the spae-wife Grua of the Giant brood. Odin has disguised himself as the prophet and has sided with the Giants. However, when the group arrives and tells Odin of their success, Odin, now knowing the Gods have a chance to win the war, removes his disguise. The Spae-wife, angry at the deceit, tries to banish the Gods with a spell, but it doesn't work. When the spae-wife uses her magic on Shea, he is transported back to the real world.
