Plot Summary
Pamela is an elderly woman living in a small house in Edinburgh with her adult son who has yet to make anything of himself. Years into her divorce from the father of her two children, Pamela seeks to fulfill her life via non-familial means, such as taking art classes, exercising, and dating. Signing up for online dating, she goes out with several men before deciding that there isn't a suitor for her: they're either bald or boring. Speaking with her friends, Pamela feels discontent with her life, but equally discontent with theirs, as well. While she's disappointed in her son for still living at home, the alternative lives that her friends live don't sound anymore appealing. As they tell her, sex only gets better with age, but Pamela finds this to be a boring fate. She'd rather gain wisdom and experience; sex isn't of interest to her, and the last time she partook in the activity was three years ago. She hooked up with one of her course teachers, Pamela found the encounter extremely underwhelming. In the midst of her humdrum life, Pamela has hidden a secret from everyone she knows: she is pregnant. Considering possibilities from immaculate conception to the mythological birth of Venus from sea foam, Pamela has no idea how she has become impregnated. She needs to come up with a backstory about how a child has come into her possession, but one that will keep her out of an asylum. When the baby is born with ethnic features, Pamela decides that her backstory will be that she adopted them from a foreign country. Pamela lifts her chin, preparing herself for the wicked turn her life is about to take.
