Plot Summary
Joan joins a congregation of desperate strangers waiting for sunrise in a dystopian New York City. The gathered luckless inscribe prayers on altars made of garbage, hoping the Saint of the Sidewalks will burn their offerings with the rising sun and thus grant their wish. The sun illuminates Joan's vague prayer—"I need a miracle"—for a moment. Then it morphs into a thunderstorm. Joan wakes the next day to viral fame. Crowds swarm around her, calling her Our Lady of the Lightning Strike, and her phone blows up with notifications. The source of her desperation is revealed: the recent loss of her cheating boyfriend, disloyal best friend, and steady job in the course of one day. The sudden global obsession with Joan suffocates her. She tries to reject it, but she dreams every night of thousands of voices praying to her. More strange things happen: she conjures lightning out of nowhere, or out of her arm. She meets the original Saint of the Sidewalks, who warns of the harrowing responsibility of sainthood. Joan runs away to recover her privacy, but she still performs miracles through her computer screen, choosing only the most specific prayers to save others from her bizarre fate.
