Plot Summary
Maggie, a thirty-eight year old neuroscientist, gets into a car crash. While her two boys survive, she dies. However, she still has consciousness. This is because of research that allows damaged brains to experience sensations such as sight and hearing. In fact, this is Maggie's own research. When Randy, Maggie's former science partner, comes in to perform research on her brain, Randy does not know that the brain belongs to Maggie. By causing irregular brain signals, she is able to alert Randy that the brain is in fact hers. They develop a system of yes-and-no questioning in order to communicate with each other, and together, Randy and Maggie try to finish the bionet research project. Randy is one day asked out by Jeanine, who has been into Randy for a while. Randy says yes and starts to return feelings. The narrator is a bit jealous by this and feels lonely when Randy is gone. Eventually, Maggie is able to develop sight, and Randy gives Maggie a surprise by allowing her to see an award ceremony in which her two sons receive awards. Maggie is deeply touched by this surprise. A few more weeks pass, and the bionet is finally finished. After the showcase, Maggie asks Randy to end her.
