A few nights before the wedding ceremony, Em's mother Yulia informs Em that she plans to get married. The groom, whom Yulia met only three weeks ago, is referred to as Brother Khalid at his mosque. At the wedding, Em wears a hijab like her mother asks and tries her best to fit in despite the fact that she is not herself Muslim. She meets Rehan, a boy about her age, and they begin to talk. After Yulia and Khalid return from their honeymoon, Em attends Sunday school at the mosque. She meets sisters Sabrena and Hala and the three girls, along with Rehan, become friends. One night, Em checks Yulia's closet for a missing sweater and notices that all the prayer books, new clothes and scarves Yulia bought when she married Khalid are still there. Unlike all her other hobbies, it looks like Yulia plans to stick to this one. The next day at the mosque, a woman confronts Em and says she doesn't belong there. Em has a meltdown in front of all of Yulia's friends and tells Yulia that her marriage and newfound religion are just another phase. After she skips Sunday school, Em comes home to find Sabrena, Hala, and Rehan at her front door. Em, reluctant at first, accepts their friendship. The next morning, Em offers to cook for Khalid and the two begin to mend their relationship over food.
