Plot Summary
A woman has passed on to the rich spirit world after being hit by a truck on her way home. Everything in this world is complex and new, but she is able to savor the sensory remnants of the old world through her husband, Reginald. Reggie chose upon their marriage to wear his wife's eyes should she die before him, a smooth procedure which allows him to see the world from his her perspective. He does this as a romantic gesture, and at first uses the switch as a tool to tamp down his grief, but soon he becomes unable to cope with a woman's sight.
Reggie was always eager to create the makings of a perfect marriage, worshipping his wife and celebrating their life together as much as possible. The woman tucked away the part of herself that wanted more than just a husband and a child, settling for a life she felt she should find beautiful. She felt off-put by Reggie's worship, especially his choice to wear her eyes, and constantly felt like she was being made to swallow a bit more than she could chew.
With the eyes in place, Reggie suddenly begins to see flashes of his wife's thoughts he'd never imagined existed. He experiences moments of sexual desire for other men, flashbacks to her drunken nights when he passes limes at the grocery store, and a reeling feeling when he encounters a man she'd had sex with. The worst is going to sleep with the eyes: he has full access to a woman's thoughts, which the wife knows is too much for any man to bear. He sees what the wife was hiding; how she truly felt about the marriage. He cannot bear the emotional energy of constantly fearing harassment on the streets. When all these tortures become too much, Reggie pours a glass of battery acid into his eyes to blind himself.
