Plot Summary
A woman, Rosie McDonald, acquires and sells rare dogs for a living with her husband, Joe. Joe becomes paralyzed after a spine injury caused by a dog attack, leaving Rosie to run the business herself. It is a male dominated field, on the business and consumer end, and she is constantly having to prove herself. She meets with a doctor to discuss a rare dog he is after- the vampire dogs of Fiji, that are known to be skittish, wild, and most importantly, they drink blood. The doctor says he wants the dog for his sick son, Raphael, but Rosie suspects that he is lying. She travels to Fiji anyways to procure the dog, accepting that money is money, unwilling to turn down the offer. She brings her sister-in-law, Gina, with her. Gina is a pet psychic and accompies Rosie on all of her travels. When they arrive in Fiji, Rosie immediately approaches locals to try to find more information on the vampire dogs and where she may capture them. Multiple people warn her of a big yellow dog, who is the pack leader. The arrive at the waterfalls the next day, each on numbered in order as they go down, one through nine. The first waterfalls are beautiful and peaceful, but as they descend to the lower waterfalls, closer to the vampire dogs at waterfall nine, the atmosphere becomes more dark and tense. Gina say she does not want to be there, but Rosie urges her to push on. They reach the eighth waterfall, which is riddled with dead animals and is the graveyard, according to Gina. The vampire dogs are there, and attack Rosie. Meanwhile, the pack leader, the big yellow dog, appears. Gina, moved by her phsyic empathy for the dog, moves toward the dangerous beast wanting to pet him and give him comfort, believing if she does he will give her a companion for life. The dog attacks Gina, and Rosie is unable to rescue her as she tries to defend herself against the dogs while also capturing at least three for the doctor. She leaves the waterfall without Gina, with vampire dogs and regular "gaze" dogs in her bag. She returns to the States and delivers two vampire dogs to the doctor, who is pleased with her. He calls her back several weeks after she delivers the dog to show her how well he has taken care of them. She returns, and a young woman who seems to be a secretary lets her in. There are multiple sickly-looking people sitting in the opening room to his house, reading magazines. She realizes the doctor lied about his sick son and is instead charging people to have their blood sucked and "cleaned" by the dogs, like leeches. Rosie is angered to have been tricked by the doctor, but drinks iwth him and ends up sleepng with him that evening. She returns home to the puppies she captured on her journey to the vampire dogs in the early hours of the morning.
