Plot Summary
Helen is a woman in her seventies whose husband Sean passed away fifteen years ago. She lives a solitary life now, and mostly interacts with her dog, Cass. One night, she sees a shape in her backyard and heads outside to investigate. She finds a small boy petting Cass against the fence. She invites the boy in and gives him some coffee, and when he falls asleep on the couch, she puts a blanket around him. Helen finds the boy in her home several times after that night. She feeds him breakfast before he leaves for school and leaves a pillow and blanket on the couch for him in case he comes in the night. The boy introduces himself as Andy, and from their conversations, Helen learns that Andy lives with his Uncle Jake, that Jake hits the boy, and that Jake is involved in some shady business which he occasionally ropes Andy into. When she returns home, Helen calls her nephew Micky, to whom she passed on the family business: Dorchester Vending Machines and Trucking. She asks if he's doing any business in her parish, and he says no, and asks if she's in trouble. Helen hangs up. Later that week, she confirms what a neighbor had told her: every Wednesday at 9pm, a black Mercedes stops in front of Jake's house for an hour while a man does business with Jake. The next Wednesday, Helen wakes having made a decision. She puts two fat wads of cash in a bag and walks to Jake's apartment. Jake thinks she's from Social Services, and tries to send her away, but Helen tells him her last name slowly and waits for him to recognize it; she is aware that the name is known around crime circles in Dorchester. She tells Jake that he is unfit to raise Andy, and that she will pay him ten thousand dollars to sign guardianship forms releasing Andy to her care. Jake becomes angry, and pins Helen to the wall, his hands around her neck. Helen reaches into her bag, pulls out her gun, and shoots Jake in the stomach. As he roils on the floor, Helen peers into the kitchen and sees small bags filled with white powder. She turns to leave; she'll call Micky to clean up the mess. She tells Jake, as he lays dying on the floor, that she will meet Andy after school.
