Plot Summary
A group of four individuals get chased by a pregnant woman through a bayou called Beatnik Bayou. The group is consisted of two students--Argus and Denver--and two teachers named Trigger and Cathay. It's hard to differentiate them because they all appear to be around 13-years-old. At first, Cathay talks to the woman, but then they begin to yell at each other and they run to Trigger's home, which is the bayou. It is very muddy there and the woman has trouble keeping up with them because she is pregnant. Eventually, they stop to confront her and she explains that someone recommended Cathay to be her unborn child's teacher. Cathay explains that he can't because he promised to teach Argus and after that, he's going to regress back down into a 7-year-old to teach a younger generation. When the woman refuses to leave, the group begins pelting her with mud from the bayou until she runs away. Argus thinks about the different places on the bayou. There's a bait shop and lunch place called the Sugar Shack and then there are few cars that are broken and overgrown. There's also a large wall that divides this town from the others, even though the bayou is as large as a disneyland. This town is one of many on the moon. The sun that shines is powered, but sometimes it's difficult to keep on so there are many days of fog and dark nights, which is similar to the Old Earth. The bayou is maintained by Trigger, who gets by with her teacher budget. Another structure on the bayou is a teepee where they group stays often. After they experience their chase with the pregnant woman, they go to the teepee and recap on their day. Trigger gets a pipe and begins to smoke it. They all pass it around, but it only makes Denver fall asleep. Cathay and Trigger have sex on the other side of the teepee and then Cathay goes to cuddle Argus. Argus thinks about how in love with Cathay he is. Cathay has been his teacher for many years and they have both changed genders numerous time and spent many hours having sex. Argus tells Cathay that he loves him, but Cathay reminds him that soon he will be a 7-year-old again so he can teach the younger generation. This makes Argus very sad and upset, but he ends up calming down after they both share an intimate moment together. Argus makes his way home after that time and thinks about how different aged children get different rights and respect from those older than them. On the bus, he sees a woman in her mid-twenties and stares at her because he thinks she is beautiful. Her name is Trilby and she asks to buy him a drink after they get off the train. After they get a drink, Trilby and Argus go to the public baths and then have sex. Argus goes home where his mother, Darcy, is waiting and making dinner. Darcy is polyamorous and has numerous male artists that she lives with. A man is sleeping in the living room and Argus steps over him to see his mother. They joke about all of the partners she has had and then talk about his decision to remain a male. Argus tells his mother about the pregnant woman to avoid the conversation, and then tells her about Cathay. The next day, Argus goes with his friends to a celebration called Mardi Gras '56. He spends some time at Cultural Heritage Museum before heading to meet his friends at the Sugar Shack. They all find clothing to wear to the celebration and then go to it. The parade and celebration are mainly people dressed up and holograms, but the French Quarter seems very similar to what is described in the history books about Earth. During this time, Argus admires the decorations on the streets and then sees Trilby driving a car. She motions for him to join her and he does. As they do, Argus realizes that Trilby is his new teacher after Cathay, or at least she wants to be. He tells her that he doesn't want a new teacher and would rather be independent, but she explains that her mother and Cathay recommended her to Argus. Argus thinks he is being manipulated and asks her what she teaches. Trilby says that she teaches sex and also other things. Suddenly, a man approaches their window and explains that Argus is being arrested. Argus isn't too worried about being arrested because many people are arrested without any charges. However, the Central Computer of the law enforcement building and his friends and family are there too. The Central Computer lists all of their rights and explains that they are going to court. The court case is all of his group against the pregnant lady, named Tiona because they assaulted her. The two teachers end up winning the case, but are nervous about going to talk to the Teacher's Association about what they did. Trigger gets a three-years probation and Cathay is not allowed to teach younger children. Additionally, Trigger's bayou is going to be turned into a golf course and her pet hippo--Tuesday--is probably going to be taken away or frozen. Also Tiona's baby will be put into a bottle until Tiona is proven to be sane again. Argus is very upset with the results of the court case and Trilby attempts to comfort him. They talk for a little about his feelings and then have sex. She gives him a grade based on his performance and then explains her role as a teacher. She is going to give him advice if he comes to her. Trilby describes herself as a professional adult while Cathay was a professional child because Cathay taught Argus when he was 7-years-old and "grew up with him." Argus agrees to have Trilby as his teacher and they have sex again. Trilby, Cathay, and Argus sit together at the Sugar Shack and talk about Cathay's recent demotion. He is very upset about it and eventually are able to console and comfort him until he falls asleep. A few months later, Cathay stays with Argus and his mother, but is always depressed. Argus goes to play golf occasionally where the bayou used to be. It only has two holes, but is probably going to be renovated soon.
