Plot Summary
A young woman in New York City sits on a park bench, scrolling through the Instagram of a former classmate, Seraphina, and criticizes her for traveling during the pandemic. She follows forum chatter about Seraphina as she's not the only one who loves to hate-stalk Seraphina. After the young woman gets furloughed from her job, she messages Seraphina, who offers to hire and house her in Los Angeles. She moves out there to work for Seraphina, her tasks being taking pictures of Seraphina, drafting posts and offering advice on political messages. A lot of the time they just lounge in the pool, drink wine and watch TV. Seraphina missteps with a few of her posts on racial justice and is called out for being performative. After Seraphina posts a photo featuring the young woman, who is a BIPOC, the message boards start to speculate about their relationship and background. While Seraphina is on a trip to Arizona to soak in mud baths, the woman, unsupervised, begins to post anonymously about Seraphina on the message boards. To her surprise, she finds out that someone from college, Molly, has been posting gossip about her. Realizing that Seraphina is starting to abandon her, the young woman flies back to New York, taking Seraphina's iPad. Later when she logs on to the iPad, she realizes that Seraphina had been logged onto Molly's account.
