Plot Summary
In the near future, a woman lives in a small town in Vermont following an apocalyptic event. A mysterious disease took out a large portion of the population in 2015, leaving those that are left with a drastic resource shortage. The woman worked as a writer before the apocalypse but gave it up as her loved ones perished. Now, she decides that she’ll pick up writing again, for the sake of creating a written record of the time she’s living through for future generations. Upon hearing her plan, the librarian, Matilda, warns her that there will likely not be a future generation to read her work. Regardless, she keeps writing. However, one day, a man comes into the small town and warns the people that he’d just met with a government-led troop called Operation Restore Hope that was planning on regaining central control of the country. The man advises the villagers to run, but they all vote to stay. The woman thinks back to the early 2000s and admits that those people who believed that their lives were all governed by a conspiracy back then were likely right. Eventually, Operation Restore Hope barges into the town. Waiting with a rifle laid across her knees, the woman is ready to fight.
