The members of a small town in the contemporary American Northwest mourn the recent death of a little girl. They bake her pies, strew flowers across her grave, dig a hole for her in the ground, and put her in it. A former friend of the girl’s watches and participates. She promises herself that she’ll use this moment to remember her own mortality, but by the end of the day, she knows that she’ll continue to treat death as something distant, just a bad dream.
