Plot Summary
Henry is an English major who just finished his junior year of college. For the summer, he returns to Arbenville, his small hometown. One evening, his high school friend Maggie picks him up for an adventure. She pulls up in her lime green jalopy, and they rumble down the road. Maggie, also a junior, is all smiles and mysterious glances. She reports that she’s changed her major for the third time, this time to archaeology. She chides him about the book he’s supposed to be writing, and he tells her he hasn’t made any progress.
After a while of riding in the woods, they pull up to the dilapidated Prewitt Mansion. Russell, the final component of their trio, emerges from the trees with a lantern. He was a star football player in high school, and now he’s an economics major. He greets them with crushing hugs. Maggie starts a fire, and the three watch the flames in silence. Then, Maggie reveals the reason she brought them there. She wants to dig up an old outhouse in the woods. It hasn’t been used since the Prewitt grounds were abandoned decades ago, and she figures that it could be a fun adventure for the three of them.
Henry and Russell aren’t so sure—shoveling human excrement doesn’t exactly sound like summer fun. Maggie presses on: they might move away and lose touch after graduation, and this would be a last chance for them to really bond. It’s not like their minimum wage jobs will miss them. At last, the guys agree to help Maggie. They’re used to her schemes, and this will be one for the ages.
